Gas Prices Even Slowing Down Race Cars

Gas prices are even slowing down race cars. According to a recent New York Times report, "The cost of high-octane fuel for the racecars is up to $8.25 a gallon," and "the escalating price of fuel is altering the already skimpy economics of lower-tier racing, the type that takes place on the half-mile dirt oval at New Egypt Speedway and at most tracks across the country."

Small-scale racing teams often run on a tight budget, and with the increasing cost of racing fuel -- and of diesel to power the heavy truck-and-trailer rigs that drive race cars to the track, gas costs are forcing racers to cut back. "Gas costs are less an issue for teams on the big-time circuits, like Nascar’s Sprint Cup series, because they generally have fuel provided for their racecars and have big-ticket sponsorship deals to help offset travel expenses." But the small-circuit races where drivers learn their skills before moving up to the big races are starting to feel the pinch.

"The stuff these engines race on is 110-octane. But when you're running a low budget, love-of-the-sport operation, it's costly." A recent Winged Sprint race in Salem, Indiana saw a quarter fewer competitors than in previous years.

Even some high-budget race teams are experimenting with fuel changes. Motor Trend reports, "Audi Sport, the automaker's in-house racing division, will be debuting an all new diesel fuel to be used by its dominant R10 TDI LMP1 cars at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans." In Audi's case, the experiment is driven by environmental concerns, not cost-cutting. "The race-only fuel is said to not only produce ample power, but also dramatically reduce CO2 emissions."

McMurray denies rumors about leaving Roush

Jamie McMurray is denying any rumor that he will be leaving Roush/Fenway Racing at the end of this year. The Charlotte Observer, on Monday, reported that the driver of the #26 Irwin Tool Ford, was out at the end of the year and that he is currently looking for a ride for the 2009 season and beyond.

"There's no truth to the rumor." McMurray said, "I spoke to (Roush Fenway Racing president) Geoff Smith this morning. ... You never know what's going to happen, but as of today there's no truth to that."

After 2009 Jack Roush must downsize to a 4 car team, from the 5 car stable he currently has, because of a new rule imposed by NASCAR. With the sharing of materials and technical information between Roush/Fenway Racing and Yates Racing, there very well maybe a way around this new rule. McMurray can be behind the wheel of a Yates car, seeing that the relationship between Roush Racing and Yates Racing makes it almost like one large team. This is the only way that all 5 drivers can still be in Roush equipment.

GENE ESCAPES SERIOUS INJURY IN LE MANS CRASH

Ok, ok its not a Stock Car but amazing none-the-less.

Marc Gene escaped serious injury following a high speed crash during testing for the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday.

Gene was on a quick lap in the No. 7 Peugeot when he lost control in the second part of the Porsche Curves, spinning and flipping across the track before hitting the wall backside first.

Medical crews treated Gene on the scene before he was transported to the infield medical centre where a determination was made to send him to the local hospital.

Initial reports suggested he had suffered a broken toe and a badly bruised elbow but team officials say he has a hairline fracture and could be released to compete in 10 days time.

The same cannot be said for the car, which is a write off, prompting Peugeot to ask race organizers if they can use one of their other cars for qualifying and the race rather than attempt to re-build the car in 10 days.

Steve Park Still On Track in Camping World Series

Former NASCAR Cup driver Steve Park is still getting it done on the track. Park is currently 3rd in the NASCAR Camping World point standings. He has 3 top 10's and is 85 points away from leader Auston Dillon.

Park, who raced in the #1 DEI Chevy in the NASCAR Cup series, was injured in a Busch Series crash in 2001, which left him with a brain injury. After that his career took a downward turn. Before his wreck he was on his way to a great Cup Series Career.

"Between getting hurt, coming back from getting hurt and winning again, and trying to get a name back for myself where people recognize that I can win races again, was something I worked towards," Park said. "Now I have to rework towards that."

"Really, it all started with Dale [Earnhardt] passing away. It was like my dad passing away. It took a toll on DEI, took a toll on myself, took a toll on all the race fans that were involved. It's been a downhill spiral since then. It's time to pull back on the rudder and come out of that tailspin."

With an 8th place finish on Sunday at South Boston Speedway in the #35 Waste Management Recycle America Chevrolet, he is starting to show some that he can still drive a race car, and do it with success. The next race the Camping World series will visit is Watkins Glen International on June 8th 2008. Park is no stranger to Victory Lane at the Glen he won his first race in the NASCAR WINSTON CUP Series in August of 2000.

Morning Brew

A few rumors and other news:

  • A report that Ganassi and Penske are merging? The talk this past weekend has been the a possible alliance or a buyout by Roger Penske of Chip Ganassi's stock car team is in the works. Both team field Dodges in NASCAR Sprint CUP and Gansaai recently won the Indy 500 with driver Scott Dixon. But when Mike Accavitti, director of Dodge Brand and SRT Marketing Communications, he said the rumors are "Absolutely preposterous!" Accavitti said "That would be like putting the Hatfields and McCoys together."
  • At Dover Kyle Busch may have won the race, but he almost lost a helmet. Busch helmet was stolen from the garge Friday night, but reportedly security officers caught the thief. "Someone snuck in the garage with the cleanup crew and stole it." said Sunday's winner Kyle Busch. "Somebody saw it happen, I guess, and they told the security guards outside. They were checking everybody that was leaving and they found him and brought the helmet back." When asked if the helmet had any special significance to Busch, he said "It didnt matter, it's not a lucky helmet."
  • Speaking of helmets, I ran across this over at Rubbin's Racin's Forums, the winner for the best helmet design goes to.......MotoGP driver Valentino Rossis

  • Prelude to the Dream will be aired Wednesday Night from Eldora Speedway, with another sell-out crowd for the all-star dirt late model race, which features 25 world renown drivers. Some driver listed to race are: Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin, Bobby Labonte, and many more. All will be driving 2,300-pound dirt late model stock cars, with 800 horsepower. For more info go to: HBO.com

Kyle Busch...is it his time?

Can anyone stop Kyle Busch, after a not so amazing run at Hendrick Motorsports, Busch is on track to be the top driver at the end of this season. With this latest win at Dover today, his 4th out of the 13 races so far, he is leading the points and on the way to bring the #18 JGR Toyota to the Winners Circle many more times.

If Kyle continues to rack up wins at the rate he is, we are looking at about 11 wins by season end. YES 11! Now Jimmie Johnson won 10 lat year and still had to fight in the last 10 chase races, but think of this, so far this season Kyle Busch has 10 Nascar wins,
four in Cup, four in Nationwide and two in Trucks.

How does he compare with others that have had dominated in the Cup level? Jeff Gordon won 13 times in 33 races nearly 40% of the time in 1998, Rusty Wallace won 10 of 30 races (but not the title because of 5 DNFs) in 1993, Dale Earnhardt won 11 of 29 races (37.9%) in 1987, Bill Elliott won 11 of 28 races (but not the title) in 1985, and Darrell Waltrip won 24 of 61 races (39.3 %) when he won the 1981-82 titles.

Now Busch doesn't have the Championship in his hands yet, but with wins giving him extra points going into the chase, you have to believe he will be a major factor.

When asked about all the success he has found this year, he said:

"For me, I believe there's a way that you drive the trucks, there's a way you drive the Nationwide cars,'' Busch said. "That's full out, as fast as you can go. The harder you go, the faster you can go. These cars here, you have to pace yourself a little bit. You have to slow them down. You can drive them hard for the first three or four laps, then you have to start backing off, start slowing down, slowing up your entry, slowing down the center, just kind of moseying around the corner, trying to make the thing stick in one particular groove. I've found something that's worked for me here recently in the past few weeks. I found it at Darlington. I won there. Then I finished third at Lowe's. Then we won here again today. You know, we're gaining on the car as well. But I think a lot of it is a little bit of driver. You got to stay calm when you can. You’ve got to get going when the time's right and when you can get riled up.''

Who would have thought a year ago we would be talking about Kyle Busch 4 time winner in 2008 and NASCAR Sprint Cup Points leader?

Other notes from today race:

  • Tony Stewart's comments after a lap 16 multi-car wreck after contact between David Gilliland and Elliott Sadler: “I take 100% responsibility -- it’s my fault for being even anywhere close to Elliott (Sadler),'' Stewart said. "If I’m within a half a lap of him, I expect that to happen. It’s my fault -- I’m the one that hit him. When I hit him it caused all the guys behind us to wreck. So it’s my fault.”
  • Greg Biffle finished third for his third consecutive top-three finish.
  • Matt Kenseth finished fourth continuing his recent surge. He was sixth at Darlington, placed seventh in the 600. He has gone from 22nd in the points before Darlington to 16th and is 95 points out of 12th place.
  • Dave Blaney's ninth-place finish was his second top-10 finish in the last three races (he also was ninth at Darlington). The Bill Davis Racing team is showing some life after struggling to be in the top 35 in car owner points earlier this season.
  • Scott Riggs fell out of the top 35 in car owner points, meaning both Haas CNC cars must qualify on time. Those 150 points the team was penalized for after their violation at Charlotte kind of makes the team not such a good buy.....huh Tony?
  • Joey Logano finished sixth in his NASCAR Nationwide debut Saturday at Dover.

McMurray gone after this season

Jamie McMurray will not return to Roush Fenway Racing next season and has been actively seeking other employment, in the past week or so, representatives on behalf of McMurray have notified other Cup teams of his availability beginning next season, multiple sources confirmed on Sunday.

McMurray finished 10th in Sunday's Best Buy 400 - just his second top-10 finish of the season.

McMurray's departure could accomplish two important goals for Roush.

The organization has been in discussions with sponsor Crown Royal to pair that sponsorship with driver Greg Biffle beginning next season, although a final decision has not been made, sources said. Officials with Crown Royal could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

It remains unclear whether the sponsor would move to Biffle's No. 16 Ford, or Biffle would move to McMurray's No. 26 next season. Biffle has been in negotiations with Roush for a contract extension for almost a year, but it remains unfinished.

In addition, McMurray's departure could also open the door for Roush Fenway to move from five to four Cup teams by 2009, one year sooner then required by NASCAR's four-car limits on ownership.

NASCAR officials on Sunday said they have had no discussions with Roush regarding the organization's movement to four teams in 2009.

McMurray entered the Cup series driving for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates with great fanfare in 2002, winning the fall race at Lowe's Motor Speedway while substituting for an injured Sterling Marlin. He went on to spend three more seasons with Ganassi before leaving for Roush in 2006.

McMurray snapped his career-long 166-race winless streak in Cup last season, taking the July race at Daytona Beach, Fla.

He is now 22nd in points, 259 outside the top 12 that will qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
